Air Niugini chooses A220s to replace ageing Fokker fleet
Port Moresby based airline, Air Niugini has chosen the Airbus A220 to replace its old fleet of Fokker F100s and F70s.
The flag carrier of Papua New Guinea, Air Niugini has officially announced that they will replace their seven F100s and six F70s with brand new Airbus A220s as a part of a large fleet renewal program.
The airline has been torn between purchasing the A220 or E195-E2 to replace their old Fokkers, however, the decision to acquire A220-100 and -300. The minister for State-Owned Enterprises told media in Port Moresby recently that the country's prime minister and National Executive Council had approved the choice.
The new aircraft are a part of the airline’s wider fleet renewal program. This will also see two new Boeing 787-8s join the fleet replacing Air Niugini’s Boeing 767-300ERs. These will be delivered alongside eleven new A220s to replace the Fokker F100s and F70s.
Deliveries of the new aircraft are expected to begin in the first quarter of 2025.
Duma said the order would consist of both types, the A220 and 787, however, he did not give an exact breakdown by variant. Funding for the 13 overall aircraft (including the 787s) will be 80% financed by external export credit agencies and 20% by PNG government funds.
