The airline has confirmed orders for two more A220-100s, adding to the existing orders for six that the airline ordered back in 2023. Bringing the airlines total number of firm orders to eight. Air Niugini also signed a lease for three larger A220-300s with US-based firm Azorra.
The order came just weeks before Air Niugini’s first A220-100 leaves Airbus’ final assembly line in Mirabel, Canda.
The A220s will initially replace the airline’s long serving Fokker 100/70 fleet on domestic routes, and eventually the Boeing 737s as well.
The jets will primarily be focused on upgrading the airlines domestic routes but can eventually be used on international routes including new routes that the airline is studying closely.
All the A220 aircraft will be fitted with Air Niugini's comfortable Business and Economy seating, and will also offer complimentary WiFi access for all customers.
Gary Seddon, chief executive of Air Niugini, said: “The A220 is set to form the backbone of our domestic and regional fleet and will support economic development in Papua New Guinea. As we continue to forecast strong growth we have made the decision to increase our orders for this fuel efficient type, bringing a whole new level of efficiency and comfort for our operations.”
Air Niugini will be the 25th airline to operate the A220, with over 900 of these moderns jets having been ordered by other airlines around the world.
