Redevelopment Ahead at Wellington Airport

Recently Wellington Airport have announced exciting new projects to revitalise areas in the surrounding suburbs of Rongotai and Lyall Bay. Let's take a look at what they have planned.

Wellington Airport have announced the airport has purchased two high profile waterfront corner sites adjacent from Lyall bay beach. Once constructed by early 2024 these areas will feature Hospitality areas and improved public walkways & landscaping overlooking the Cook strait and the southern end of the Wellington Airport runway.

In a statement made by Wellington Airport chief executive Matt Clarke says:

“We’re passionate about making a world class airport experience, and we feel the same about enhancing our neighbourhood. Residents and visitors can look forward to a major upgrade.

In October, Construction is also set to begin on a new modern airport fire station on Coutts

Street in Rongotai. This project will also involve landscaping to improve the streetscape and create a new spectacular planespotting area. This new area is set to become Wellington's first official airport spotting area similar to Sheps Mound in Sydney.

These two projects come alongside a deal the Wellington Airport signed last year to lease two hectares of land between Tirangi Road and Kingsford Smith Street for a large-scale public transport redevelopment.
