Air New Zealand flight from Wellington to Sydney lands after bomb threat
An Air New Zealand flight from Wellington landed safely at Sydney Airport last night following a bomb threat reported on board. The aircraft, flight NZ247, carried 140 passengers and was met by a significant emergency response, with 40 emergency crews on standby as it touched down.
Footage from 7News Sydney’s helicopter showed the plane landing safely before taxiing to a remote section of the runway. The incident prompted a “huge response from emergency services,” ensuring the passengers' safety.
Air New Zealand has since canceled the aircraft’s return flight to Wellington. A spokesperson from the airline, Morgan, apologized for the disruption, stating, “We are working with local authorities and following standard protocols for such incidents. The safety and security of all passengers and crew is our utmost priority.”
Australian Federal Police confirmed their involvement in the response, but no further details were provided. Flight NZ247 departed Wellington at 4:34 pm and arrived in Sydney as scheduled, despite the bomb scare.
The incident occurred less than 24 hours after King Charles III and Queen Camilla arrived at Sydney Airport for their Royal visit. NSW Police acknowledged the reports but offered no additional comment.
