Three were killed after two light planes collided midair in Sydney
Three people have died after two light planes collided midair over Sydney's southwest in an accident that responders have described as "unsurvivable."
Emergency crews arrived after receiving reports of the collision around 11:50 a.m. on Saturday near Belimbla Park, close to Oakdale
The first plane, a Cessna 182, was found ablaze upon impact with the ground, according to NSW Police Acting Superintendent Timothy Calman. It is believed the aircraft was traveling from Cessnock to Wollongong with two passengers, yet to be identified by police.
A second aircraft, a Jabiru carrying one man, was located approximately one kilometer north of the first crash site; the man was declared dead at the scene.
"Initial indications point to a midair collision," Superintendent Calman stated. "Witnesses reported seeing debris falling from the sky, and the damage at the scene suggests the first plane descended directly to the ground."
Ambulance and fire crews are present at the crash site, and two crime scenes have been established. The Australian Transport Safety Bureau (ATSB) will send investigators to the sites to collect data, interview witnesses, and review air traffic control, flight tracking, and weather information.
"In the coming days, investigators will conduct site mapping, examine the wreckage, and transport relevant components to ATSB’s technical facilities in Canberra for further analysis," the ATSB announced, urging witnesses or anyone with footage to come forward.
